50 years ago PCI Race Radios was born. To celebrate PCI is having an open house with plenty of vehicles on display, door prizes, and a taco truck on Friday, August 19th at their headquarters in Cypress, California from 12 to 5 pm.
PCI Race Radios began in 1972 when Bob “Weatherman” Steinberger put communications in the vehicles of Bill Stroppe, Joe MacPherson, and Walker Evans. At the 1974 Mint 400, he sent up three weather balloons with five hundred feet of coax attached, making the first successful radio relay from a pit.
It is believed that Joe MacPherson, who couldn’t remember his name, dubbed him “Weatherman” on the radio. Bob passed in 2017, handing over the torch to his son Scott Steinberger who is still known as the Weatherman today, providing radio relay to SCORE racers in Baja. Door prizes will be provided by some of the vendors like Impact, Maglock, Icom, Kenwood, Lowrance, and of course, PCI products. Tacos will be served from 12-3 pm courtesy of Fluid Logic. There will be race and prerunner vehicles on display and even a Robby Gordon Speed UTV.
